Motorhome Insurance Top Tips

September 3, 2010 No comments »

One of the most common mistakes people make when taking out insurance for their motorhome is insuring the motorhome under a standard car insurance policy. It may seem that the policy is very similar, but it could leave you without the correct cover.

For example – a specialist motorhome insurance policy will cover your camping equipment as well as your vehicle. Options such as new for old cover are often limited under a car policy.

Another consideration when comparing insurance policies for your motorhome is whether breakdown cover is included. As with any breakdown service, the one provided with your motorhome insurance policy could prove invaluable should your motorhome breakdown whilst on holiday. Good questions to ask your breakdown provider is whether there are length or weight restrictions for the service they provide and whether they have coverage in Europe. You may think you have been sold specialist motorhome breakdown cover, only to find that your vehicle is too long or too heavy to be recovered, leaving you stranded.

If you secure your motorhome with an alarm or tracking device, look for insurance companies that will recognise this and reward you with insurance discounts. You should also be able to earn a no claims discount on your policy and even get a discount for being a member of a motorhome club or online forum, so check what discounts you are entitled to.

Extra cover benefits such as European cover and European breakdown may be available at extra cost, therefore, if you don’t plan to travel outside the UK, you could ask for these benefits to be removed, saving you money on your premium. Another way to reduce your premium is to limit the mileage in your motorhome each year or increase your voluntary excess if this is possible.

When ringing around for insurance quotes, remember to ask the right questions and only pay for the cover you need.

Orchard Credit Card – Take Advantage of the Benefits

It’s not surprising that Orchard credit cards from HSBC finance have become one of the fastest growing credit cards in the United States. With policies to make the consumer swoon, they have taken their rightful place among the country’s credit card elite. If you are a consumer thinking about adding a card to your credit repertoire, you could do a lot worse than HSBC finance and their line of Orchard credit cards. Here’s a few reasons why Orchard credit cards are leading the way into the new millennium.

Free Online Bill Pay

In today’s internet driven world, more and more companies and people are turning away from snail mail and paper checks as a way of doing business. That way of paying bills is outdated, outmoded, and frankly far too slow. It wastes money, time, stamps, and checks. The much preferred way is to pay your bills online, but not every company offers this option. Orchard credit cards do, and this is just another reason why they refuse to be left behind in the race for credit card supremacy.

Protection Against Theft And Loss

Orchard credit cards have a strict policy that protects their customers should they lose their credit card or have it stolen. Lost and stolen credit cards can cause a world of difficulty for the credit card owner. Fraudulent charges can appear, and without a solid policy in place, you may find yourself jumping through hoops so as not to be responsible for the charges. Thankfully, Orchard Bank understands that this is no way to run a business in the 21st century. For this reason, there is a zero liability policy in place, which should comfort the worried consumer thoughtful on matters of identity theft, card theft, and lost cards.

Mastercard Accepted Around The World

With an Orchard Bank Mastercard, you can be assured of rarely running into the problem of having your card declined because the business doesn’t accept the card. If you have an American Express card or a Discover card, you may have found this isn’t the case. Nearly every company that accepts credit cards to begin with, accepts Mastercard. This can assure you that whether you find yourself in Topeka, London, or Rome, you won’t be left out in the cold with only your billfold to pay for purchases.

Worldwide Cash Access

If you are in a place where Mastercard is accepted, you will also have access to cash advances through the Orchard credit card. This can come in very handy if you are faced with an activity or purchase that must be paid for in cash. Orchard credit card rates for cash advances are reasonable (though cash advances are never the best idea if you can avoid them), and it is for this reason among the others listed above that the Orchard credit card has taken the country by storm.

The Taboo Subject of Life Insurance

Life insurance is a tough subject to think about. It only takes a coastal walk along a sheer cliff-top, or a near miss on the drive home from work to realize that it probably is something one should consider sooner rather than later, especially in regards to the fact that the younger and healthier you are, the cheaper your premiums will be. The real problem with life insurance is, well, it’s never fun.

Car insurance is equally dull. But because it is the law to be insured, the majority of drivers get on with it and make sure their policy is up to date. That said, unlike the history of life insurance, the history of car insurance is sprinkled with many humorous stories of stupid people claiming for stupid things. Some claims forms have featured such absurdities as: ‘I had been driving for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident.’ And: ‘On approach to the traffic lights the car in front suddenly broke.’ And my personal favourite: ‘The accident occurred when I was attempting to bring my car out of a skid by steering it into the other vehicle.’

In terms of humorous home insurance claims, there is the famous story (sadly later proved to be fiction) of the man who insured 24 particularly expensive cigars, smoked them, and then attempted to claim his insurance because they had been destroyed by fire. He succeeded in court, but once he’d cashed his cheque, the insurance company sued him for arson.

Back to reality though, and the claim of Philip Clough. After shoving some washing into his machine before going away for the weekend, he returned to find the machine still spinning on a boil wash. The insurance company subsequently denied payment because they believed their policy didn’t cover steam damage. Luckily for Clough though, the courts saw things differently on grounds that steam is H2O, just as water is.

Although ironic, it seems to me that if the general public were to learn to laugh about life insurance, then maybe people would be able to think about it more seriously. Quite frankly, who wants to contemplate what’s going to happen after you’ve gone? It is almost a taboo subject for some people, unless it comes up during conversations about fraud or disease, it seems barely interesting at all and thus less at the forefront of our collective imagination. But the really funny thing is that it is the only policy that is pretty much certain to be paid out.
